about

“Gimme The Check” the last song of the EP comes as an unexpected curveball that packs quite a punch. Unlike some of the friendlier records of the EP, The Foundation shows it’s teeth and showcases their athletic approach to their music. After the short intro, the band slaps listeners with four shots and Fredy kicks in the door; this time he comes with a flow and bars. Everything from his lyrics to his delivery speaks to his 10,000+ hours and some of the frustrations he’s experienced along the way. Lines like “been running in this game for a while now / way before y’all was on the SoundCloud / y’all been sleeping way to long / King Kong ‘bout to wake your ass up and y’all gon’ bow down” are clear indicators of what he calls a Mama Said Knock You Out kind of energy. Musically the song highlights a masterful performance by drummer Ronny Desinor. Somewhere
in between DC gogo and a New Orleans second line, he delivers a unique interpretation of one of the most important rhythms of black American culture. The chorus features a vocal arrangement by Mel Pacifico that is very reminiscent of those sing-along anthems from the queens of 90s and 2000s R&B. Stacked with rich harmonies, lush keyboards and an Isley Bros type rhythm guitar drive, the chorus rings as a glorious retribution for a hard working band. One of the most important realizations a creative can have is understanding one’s own value. The Foundation understand their value and is now shouting it from the top of every mountain they climb.

GIMME THE CHECK (lyrics)

So cold but my flow stay dirty dirty
And when I’m on the mic I’m lil’ flirty flirty
And u can call your sister and your mama
and your little baby cousin, tell him ‘bout me, if they never heard me

My squad is on fire we don’t mess around
When we step into the spot you know it’s going down
Better get your hands up on a ticket
‘Cause we about to flip it
Turn it up and shut it down

Been running in this game for a while now
Way before y’all was on a soundcloud
Y’all been sleeping way too long
king kong ‘bout to wake yo ass up, and y’all gon bow down

And we don’t get paid by the hour
‘Cause it takes too long to build an empire
Catch a vibe and we feeling inspired
And now we comin’ back with mo fire

Let’s all get away for a minute
Cause I been on my grind for way too long
And it’s taking a toll on me

Now’s the time for us to for us
to lay back and unwind
Welcome to my intermission
(Just gimme the check and I’m steppin’ out)

It’s the return of the boom bap
You bamas should move back
‘Cause we cockin’ back wit mo’ ammunition

We in the lab bumpin’ new tracks
So don’t you confuse that
With baby rappers trying to get to my position

Arrange strings w/ mandolins & violins
Flow on point like 2 PAC and Anderson

Bangin ya heads with that gogo
From the cocoa
But you don’t know
‘Cause you a no show
So don’t you come tryna pretend

Self made we came from the underground
Been puttin’ that work and it shows
And you can tell that we’ve been around
Now this shit is something we own

If they don’t understand the mission
They say you gotta leave to get a little recognition
So by the time you take a listen
I’m the motherland for an intermission

Let’s all get away
For a minute
Cause I been on
My grind for way too long
And it’s taking a toll on me

Now’s the time for us
To lay back and unwind
Welcome to my intermission
(Just gimme the check and I’m steppin’ out)

My intermission
My intermission
My intermission
My intermission
My intermission
My intermission
(Welcome to my)

Let’s all get away
For a minute
Cause I been on
My grind for way too long
And it’s taking a toll on me

Now’s the time for us
To lay back and unwind
Welcome to my intermission
(Just gimme the check and I’m steppin’ out)

Let’s all get away
For a minute
Cause I been on
My grind for way too long
And it’s taking a toll on me

Now’s the time for us
To lay back and unwind
Welcome to my intermission
(Just gimme the check and I’m steppin’ out)
