about

“Funghi” introduces itself as the continuation of “I Could Be”. During the inception of bothsongs, the groups jammed on each section going back and forth trying to find the connector. When Mel and Fredy had their writing session they found vocal parts for the first section (“I
Could Be”), but when it came time for the second section the words and melodies were difficult to come by. Reason being that the story of this piece was already complete and called for nothing more. So at the next gathering when the group asked the vocalists what they came up
with, Fredy replied “not a damn thing!”. Thus the two songs were separated and the instrumental voyage of the EP was born.
The song continues with its common denominator, the claps. When the panned rhodes chord progression enters, the groups jazz influences take shape. As soon as the drum pocket and continued clap pattern hit, the song transforms into a meditative trance that invokes the feeling of space travel. Though the song has sonic scapes pulled from psychedelic and EDM influences, the bass line comes in and grounds the entire experience. One of the visual references the group used as inspiration was a scene in Matrix 2 when the movie introduces the viewer to Zion for the first time.
The eclectic mix of funk, house, Afrobeat and jazz is The Foundation’s interpretation of the concept of Afro-futurism pioneered by funk legends like George Clinton (P-Funk) and Maurice White (EWF). The prior had ‘Swing Down Sweet Chariot’. The latter had “Fantasy”, The Foundation has “Funghi”.
