about

Fresh off the buzz of the One Step EP, Montreal powerhouse R&B / funk group Fredy V & The Foundation releases a brand new single that marks the one year anniversary of their debut recording. “On The Rise” is a song that aptly describes the current direction and mindset of the group.

The song is an ode to the theme of personal growth and development. Like many other people, the pandemic forced the group to reflect on their direction in music and in life as individuals and as an ensemble. Out of these candid conversations came these words of self empowerment heard in the song.

Fredy V comes with a whole new energy by showcasing his purest rap performance to date. His penmanship, flow and delivery comes from a genuine place as the frontman describes his strong mindset. He also expresses the sacrifices he made to get to this point which include distancing himself from the people and habits that didn’t align with his goals.

Mel Pacifico’s soulful voice enters at the chorus proclaiming the title of the song. Strong lyrics like “Done with all the lies I told myself” are testaments to the themes of accountability and maturation. The group also shows their determination when Mel states “hop on the train baby if you wanna, but don’t you get in my way”.

In regards to the musicality of the song, you can hear that the band is really hitting their stride as a production team. Between Cauldie’s synth designs and Frank O’s guitar work, “On The Rise” brings the future-classic feeling we can all relate to. From the Chic-esque rhythm guitars to the modern synth basses, this new creation sounds like Nile Rodgers and Kaytranada had a baby and hired Phonte for the family photoshoot.

lyrics

VERSE 1

Grown man talk y’all still in ya diapers
On point since the Q-Tip and the Phifa
Way before the open mics and the cyphers
Paid my dues now y’all gonna pay the piper/

Plus my flow is the purest
Swerve in my lane dog you better have insurance
Got my mind right envision my life
With nothing abundance and endurance

My hustle’s something you should never ever interrupt
Thought you knew by now I was never giving up
Got room on the mothership and we headed up
how you gon’ hold me down when I’m trying to level up

Homie I just wanna see you smiling
Can’t burn bridges when you living on an island
I know back in the day we was wiling
But now I’m getting wiser

CHORUS

I been on the rise
Done with all the lies I told myself
Closer to the prize
Hop on the train baby if you wanna
But don’t you get in my way

VERSE 2

Folks round the way asking what’s up with me
Think I’m coming off a little uppity
Took a step back from the fuckery
Sittin’ at my table now bring your own cutlery

I wish we didn’t have to regret
Constantly have to fight for respect
Why you think I always say gimme the check
Cause being black and brown is hard in Quebec (bet!)

I wanna reach a higher ground
Come if you wanna this time around
A king once told me heavy lies the crown
So I will never let you weigh me down

Homie I just wanna see you thriving’
Can’t burn bridges when you livin on an island
I know back in the day we was wilin’
But know I’m getting wise and...

CHORUS

I been on the rise
Done with all the lies I told myself
Closer to the prize
Hop on the train baby if you wanna
But don’t you get in my way

HOOK

I’m just trying to reach a higher ground
If you wanna come this time around
I will never let you weigh me down
